MC, I have never heard of a Company S. A standard regiment had ten companies A - K, with letter J not used. Better check on that.

Agreed. One thing I've occasionally seen is "S" instead of a company letter to indicate "staff"--adjutant or whatever.

Mitchell, heh? My civil war ancestor was a Mitchell from Teledega County, Alabama, with ancestors from Georgia (although his name was mis-spelled as "Mitchel" from early on, which caused considerable difficulties in tracing his records until I figured this out). I'm going to try to get my hands on the Georgia Geneology book, I can't go back any further than his father right now.

As far as I know, all my Mitchells were in Randolph County, AL. Several of my great great grandfather's sons were in the CSA, including Kinard Mitchell, who enlisted E Co, 13th Alabama Infantry, CSA. Discharged 9 Apr 1865 at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, VA. Enlisted as "Kinnard" Mitchell. My line is through Aaron Mitchell.

Okay, looks like a different line. Thanks for checking back with me, though.

By the 1850 census John Pike was married...you need to find the 1840 census or 1830 census to prove what you think is right...see we got Jasper and Simpson Pike living with William...

Here is the information I have on Berthenia Reeves.

This family is listed in the US Census for Randolph County, Alabama in three different decades--1850, 1870, and 1880. They are also buried in Pike Cemetery (Range 13E, Township 21N, Section 17). William Pike's birth and death dates are listed as 1799 and 1882, respectively. His wife's tombstone lists her name as Berthenia Reeves Pike with birth and death dates of 1804 and 1890, respectively.

The 1850 US Census for Randolph County lists William Pike's family on page 367 in Beat 12. Here are the details:

    William Pike, age 50
    Berthenia Pike, age 46
    Jasper Pike, age 22, male
    Simpson Pike, age 18, male
    Emeline Pike, age 16, female
    Jemina Pike, age 14, female
    Tabitha Pike, age 12, female
    Samantha Pike, age 11, female
    William Pike, age 8, male
    Berthenia Pike, age 6, female
    Nancy Pike, age 4, female

I wonder if William Pike Sr along John F. Pike were living in Georgia for the 1840 or 1830 census...maybe another Alabama county...?? You may want to contact the people that posted this info I found...

The two most interesting people in my family tree, Martin Bryant Born in Talladega County, Alabama 1834 and his wife Mary. She was both my GGAunt (by birth on my Dad's side of the family) and my GGGrandmother (by marriage on my Mothers side of the family).

If you come across a Confederate Soldier Named Martin Bryant Let me know; he fought with the 4th Infantry Battalion that was organized during the summer of 1861 and in September its six companies were ordered to Virginia. The men were recruited in the parishes of Madison, Ouachita, Franklin, Tensas, and Concordia. After serving in the Army of the Kanawha, it moved to South Carolina and was active in the conflict at Secessionville . Later the unit was ordered to Mississippi, then was assigned to Wilson's, D.W. Adams', and Gibson's Brigade. It fought with the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Nashville and in 1865 it aided in the defense of Mobile. The battalion lost 6 killed and 22 wounded out of the 250 engaged at Secessionville , totalled 116 men and 38 arms in December, 1863, and had 71 present for duty in November, 1864. It surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
