I had a nice Christmas present as my paperwork has been accepted by the UDC and I am now a full member. It took me some time to get all the verification to prove my ancestor, Nathaniel Cook, was related to all the lines from him to me. I appreciate the help I had from members of the forum.

It is a great feeling to know I have proved my relationship to my Great Great Grandfather. I will get my certificate in January at a special lunch meeting of the Chapter Albert Sidney Johnston 1480, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Congratulations! That is a long row to hoe, I must say. I'm glad for your acceptance. Don't know if I'm going to apply or not - I've finally proved my grandfather was a Confederate veteran. Many moons ago I applied for DAR membership because my ggggrandfather was a Revolutionary war vet and even though I had all the proper paperwork they refused to let me and my sister in because at that time Indians weren't admitted. They are now! :D I'm a member but just about had to kick their doors down to get to be one!

Congratulations. The UDC has always done great work in not only preserving the history of our ancestors who fought in the war, they do a great deal toward preserving the culture of the South. A fine group of real ladies.

Donna, what regiment did Nataniel Cook serve in? My last name is Cook and I had about 20 relatives serve in the 22nd Virginia Infantry CSA and 15 or so serve in the 7th West Virginia Cavalry. My fathers family is from Wyoming County, West Virginia.

Virginia22 Nathaniel Cook was in Co. A, 1st Batn. Kentucky Cavalry. He enlisted on 20 October 1861 at Prestonburg, Floyd County, Ky. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Middle Creek, Floyd County, Ky. He died from the wound on 10 Jan. 1862.

Nathaniel Cook was born in Harrison County, Ky. His family all from there. There are many still living in that County and surrounding counties.

I have a question for those that might know. I could at anytime join the SCV. I have the documentation for proof, no worries. The question is why would I want to? What does the SCV do? I do not have a thing against the SCV or any other organization for confederate decendants. Just want to know what it is all about.

Donna--Congrats on your membership! I'll bet being UDC in Ohio must be a bit like my being SUVCW in Virginia; the chapter isn't very big but the members you have are quite dedicated. Do great things and enjoy it all!

Diane--Glad that times have changed and DAR has opened up to ALL patriot descendants. May the changes keep coming for the better...

The Chapter is small. Cincinnati was a large Union area. For a state to be recognized by the National UDC, have to have at least three Chapters which is all Ohio has. There is the one in Cincinnati, one in Cleveland and one in Columbus area. We are a small group.

Many in our chapter have the ancestors from Virginia, Kentucky and the Carolinas that served in the Confederacy. Several members have ancestors who served with John Hunt Morgan. I have another ancestor who I am trying to prove served with Morgan. I still have a lot of paperwork to put together on him.
