Have just rewatched K Burns Episode of Gettysburg. It may be a simple thing but it had a profound affect on me and how to treat my staff. Foote talks about JEB Stuart coming back to Lee and recieving the glare because he was out of touch and could not provide the "eyes and ears of the army". He is rebuked by Lee as Stuart offers the captured wagons etc to mitigate the trouble He is actually in. Lee rebukes him and then seeing that Stuart is deeply hurt responds with words to the effect. Come now it will be alright. I find this (and I am assuming that Foote is historically correct) as a great example of leadership, rebuke given then the rebuilding of loyalty through a simple kind response. I know because I take a lot of flack for those under me, but I have their loyalty. (There is a joke I have worn out the carpet to the Chief Executives Office to cop flack directed to them). What I am saying that it is the mark of great leadership to inspire that loyalty through ones sensitivity to peoples needs and to be able to show a great humility and humanity. I think this is the mark of a great leader and I have seen others such as Nap Bonaparte with those close to him. I am just thinking out loud anyone care to comment. This post is about the human level not about the cold hard historical facts of the war.
