Hard to say with Vicksburg falling on the 4th of July. It might have lead to "peace talks." I think in the end the overwhelming economic superiority of the north would have prevailed.

Much depended upon what kind of victory Lee achieved. If was his standard win by forcing the AoP to retreat, then it would have been just another standard confederate victory, sterile of any any real strategic significance.
If he had achieved a complete strategic victory, rending the AoP essentially hors de combat for a significant time or even forcing it surrender(either event never achieved by CW armies in the field) . IMO the victory would have consisted of forcing Meade to retreat to his original Pipe Creek Lines or perhaps the Washington defenses, and the war would go one.
I have mentioned that Lincoln was a hard customer concerning surrenderin the fight for the Union as long and with all force he could muster, he had promised he would continue the fight to the bitter end, I have no reason to doubt that.

It is hard to imagine how Lee could achieve a large enough victory to really do much. After a major engagement far from home, ordnance supply would become an issue. And operating in enemy territory partially blinded him with respect to intelligence.

Brandy Station had illustrated a shift in the balance of power of cavalry forces, that wouldn't help Lee either.

I think the original question was a very good question. Too many of us "southern sympathizer" types believe with Jackson, Lee may have at least earned another stalemate; ie Antietam. After much reading I have come to believe a CSA outright victory was next to impossible. All the South could hope for was a negotiated settlement of some type. I've read somewhere (memory fails me) that was Lee's intention in invading the North both times.

Playing in the other kid's backyard tends to keep him out of your own...at least for the time being.

The most significant result of Gettysburg, was it's bringing of Grant East and to the AoP.

It would have had to have been a real butt-whuppin' to go to "peace talks". Anything less is just another battle where the Union has to lick its wounds and allow Lee to go home unmolested, itching to renew a new campaign against the AotP. Besides what Grant was doing, Rosecrans was already well on his way to Chattanooga.

No, the CSA would still have been split and the war would continue with an ultimate US victory.

It depends. If the AoP had been completely routed, driven away from Washington then Lee may have moved on Washington. If he could have ran over the defenses and captured the government, I could see a negotiated settlement as fairly likely. On the other hand the South suffered many defeats on their soil and it took a lot of them for the Confederacy to surrender.

IMHO, it would have prolonged the war in the east, but I tend to agree with the general theme that the south had too much to overcome (manpower, equipment, supplies, manufacturing, etc.), the question is how significant of a victory would Lee have needed to continue pushing either towards Baltimore, Harrisburg, or perhaps Pittsburgh. I believe that anything short of a devestating victory he still would have eventually had to pull his forces back into Virginia.
Any thoughts on where he would have went next?
