STAUNTON—A crowd of about 30 dignitaries gathered on the cobblestones between the railroad tracks and the historic American Hotel in Staunton on Thursday morning to witness the announcement of the preservation of 19 acres in the core of the McDowell Battlefield just 26 miles to the west in Highland County

Staunton was chosen as the site of the preservation announcement because of its key importance during the Valley Campaign and throughout the war. The railroad that still exists today and connects Staunton to Richmond, had only been in the city a couple of years when the Civil War began in 1861. The American Hotel that opened in 1855 with the hopes of catering to visitors on the new railroad, soon became known as the American Hospital because it housed so many wounded from the war’s battlefields.
